Resistance classes, standards and the ballistic protection of our vehicles.

Armoured vehicles are divided into various resistance or ballistic classes. What is determined is not the resistance of the entire vehicle, but the resistance of the various materials used.

Resistance classes and standards

  • Resistance classes are certified according to which firearm impact the armour withstands. EN 1063 applies to the glazing; EN 1522 and EN 1523 define the opaque materials of the remaining body parts.
  • Certification into the respective resistance class is carried out in Germany by the proof houses Mellrichstadt, Munich and Ulm.
  • Formerly the classes were designated B1 to B7 (body) and analogously BR1 to BR7 (glazing). These designations are generally no longer used, as they do not correspond to any tested standard.

Vehicle Resistance (VR)

  • Today the abbreviation VR stands for “Vehicle Resistance”. All vehicles we use are tested and armoured according to VPAM BRV 2009 as VR7 or VR9 (formerly B6 or B7).
  • VR7 (B6) has a steel thickness of 8 mm and a glass thickness of 40 mm; firing: max. calibre 7.62 × 51.
  • VR9 (B7) has a steel thickness of 10.5 mm and 68 mm glass; firing: max. calibre 7.62 × 51 HC.
  • If several calibres are specified, firing must be carried out with both to reach the resistance class. A slash in the specification means the body corresponds to class B7 and the glazing to class BR6.
